Hyderabad: Beware of fake traffic cop, extortion on the rise

HYDERABAD: People are advising to be wary as fake traffic cop is extorting money from the city motorist.

According to the New Indian Express report, Rachakonda police have launched a man hunt to nab the offender who in his late 30’s allegedly threatening bikers and extorting money in exchange for not committed traffic violation.

The fake policeman attired in civil dress allegedly threatening bikers with criminal cases if they failed to pay him money.

There have been a couple of confirmed incidents in the Malkajgiri zone, including the one where the offender, impersonating as a traffic cop has stopped a 70-year-old man and asked him to show driving licence and vehicle registration certificate. But in no time he threaten him with criminal case and took away his gold chain and ring, worth about Rs 30,000.

However, there could be several more incidents which have gone unreported because public does not realise the man is a fake.

“The extortionist accompanied the victim to four ATMs but the latter did not have enough money in his accounts. But the extortionist did not leave him and went to the victim’s home and took Rs 4,000 from him,” said Malkajgiri DCP Ramesh Naidu.

“Policemen or road transport authority officials never conduct enforcement drive against violations in civil dress. Victims can call up 100 and lodge complaints if such incidents occur,” the DCP told Indian Express.
