Hyderabad: Dowry harassment results in suicide of Shireen, husband and relatives arrested

Hyderabad: In a dowry harassment case, a woman committed suicide by hanging herself. After the incident, her husband and three other relatives were arrested for allegedly forcing her to commit suicide.

According to the details of the case, Shireen Begum (20), a resident of RR District was married on 20th April 2016 to Mohammed Jahangir of Kamatipura who is a butcher.

It is reported that the bride’s parent gave 5 lakh as dowry and golden ornaments on the occasion of marriage. Few months after marriage, the in-laws of the bride started harassing her for getting more dowry. They demanded payment of Rs. 10 lakh which bride’s parents had got after the disposal of a sawmill which fetched Rs. 16 lakh. Shireen was being subjected to atrocities every day. Meanwhile, Shireen got pregnant. In order to save her daughter from the atrocities of her in-laws, the mother of the bride, Fahmeeda Begum gave Rs. 2 lakh but the atrocities continued. On 25th July, Shireen was assaulted by her husband Jahangir, mother-in-law Safia Begum, brother-in-law, Mohammed Moin Qureshi and sister-in-law, Asia Begum. Vexed with this harassment, Shireen Begum committed suicide in her in-laws’ house by hanging herself. On the death of her daughter, Fahmeda Begum registered a complaint at Kamatipura Police Station for dowry harassment and suicide.

Police registered a case under sections 498 (A) and 304 (B). Mr. K. Ashok Chakravarti, ACP of Chairman arrested her husband, mother in-law, brother in-law, sister in-law and sent them to jail. Two more accused are absconding.
