Hyderabad Sailing Week begins
LUXOR, EGYPT - OCTOBER 23: An Egyptian crew prepare a felluca, a traditional Egyptian sail boat, for a sailing trip on the Nile River on October 23, 2013 in Luxor, Egypt. Luxor, one of Egypt's major tourist hot-spots, has struggled to attract visitors since a popular uprising overthrew former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in early 2011. The dip in tourist numbers is contributing directly to a rise in unemployment in the southern Egyptian city. The tourist industry has further dwindled since Egypt's first democratically elected President Mohammed Morsi was overthrown by the Egyptian Military in July, 2013. Major hotels in Luxor are reporting occupancy rates as low as 8% in recent months and many airlines have halted direct flights from cities in Europe to Luxor, further discouraging tourism to the Egyptian city famous for its archaeological sites. Governor of and ESL Narasimhan was the chief guest at the ceremony.

The event is being jointly organised by the EME Sailing Association and Secunderabad Sailing Club under the aegis of Laser Class Association of India, supported by Government of Telangana, a defence release said.

Lt Gen Bipin Rawat, GOC-in-C, Southern Command, was present on the occasion.

Lt Gen Gurmukh Singh, SM, VSM, President Laser Class Association of (LCAI) and Commodore EME Sailing Club, said the sport of sailing has received a tremendous boost in the country in general and Hyderabad in particular over the years.

“This year the event has taken a big leap by going multiclass. That means all senior and Olympic class sails in the country will be competing in this glorious event alongside the 31st Laser Sailing Championships. It is overwhelming to see the record breaking number of entries in the event unmatched for any sailing event in the country ever,” he said.

LCAI was founded in 1986 with a view to promote sailing in the country. Hyderabad Sailing Week is an annual feature organised by the LCAI. EME Sailing Association was formed in 1964. The sailing association has produced a number of medal winners both at national and international level, the release added.
