Indian males live 3-4 years less than females: Study

New Delhi:The life span of Indian males has dwindled 3-4 years compared to females due to a couple of reasons including smoking, aggression, unsafe sex and health hazards at work place, said a survey.

The survey, conducted by International Society for Men Health, also stated that one in two men, while one in three women, will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. During the survey, it was found that men lead in nine out of the top 10 causes of death.

“Urologists along with major stakeholder specialties like Cardiology, Oncology, Psychiatry, Endocrinology, Orthopaedics, Reproductive Medicine, and Rehabilitation Medicine are on a mission to improve the health of men and empower them to pursue healthier lives,” said the survey.

The survey also states that in countries such as Russia and Sweden the gap between the life span of males and females has gone upto 10-12 years due to the hardhip of the males.

According to the survey, men specific Prostate Cancer which was at no. 6 or 7 in India in male populations has already risen to number 3rd-4th position in different cities and can any time become the number one Cancer in Indian Male.

As per 2011 census, the sex ratio is 940 females per 1,000 males and life expectancy for males is 65.77 years and for females is 67.95 years.

“Men’s health so far has been on the back burner in India. The present issues with men’s health in India are that there has been no effort for problem assessment. There is no organised data regarding men’s health in India, no dedicated scientific body and no research, information, education or counselling regarding the subject,” states the survey.
