Inter-district gang of robbers busted in Punjab

Phagwara: Police today claimed to have busted an inter-district gang of robbers by arresting its five members, including three proclaimed offenders (POs), and recovered firearms from their possession.

Disclosing this at a press conference here today, Kapurthala SSP Rajinder Singh said the robbers, who were arrested last night, were allegedly involved in about two dozen cases of looting, rioting, extortions, gang wars, murderous assaults and land grabbing.

The gang was operating mainly in Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr and Moga.

Those who were arrested have been identified as Harpreet Singh, Randip Singh, Parminderpal, Jatinder Singh and Navneet Kumar.

Harpreet, Randip and Jatinder were POs as they had jumped bails in other cases registered in police stations, he said.

Five weapons, including two .32 bore pistols, one .30 bore pistol, one indigenous pistol, one sword, 19 live cartridges, and a car used by them in crime were seized from them, said SSP.

Harpreet of village Bohani was the kingpin of the gang, he said.

He informed that a special team of senior police officers, headed by Phagwara DSP Manpreet Singh Dhillon, arrested the robbers during a special ‘naka’ laid near ‘Adda’ Rawalpindi after a tip-off.

He said that the robbers had gathered at a deserted place behind a cluster of bushes and were planning to commit dacoity but timely action by police foiled their bid.
