Jerusalem: Nurhan Awad, 16, Palestinian girl has been sentenced to 13 and half years in prison for an alleged knife attack on Israeli last year.
According to Middle East Monitor, an Israeli’s district court on Wednesday decided to sentence Nurhan to 13-and-a-half years behind bars with a fine of almost 30,000 shekels ($7,757).
Nurhan, a year ago was arrested when she, along with her 14-year-old cousin Hadil Wajih Awad, allegedly carried out a stabbing attack.
Nurhan was severely wounded after being shot in the chest twice at close range. Her cousin; Hadil was shot dead on the spot by occupation forces during the incident.
“Nurhan was shot and arrested [at the scene of the alleged attack],” said the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society “while her cousin, Hadil Awwad, was killed [by police at the scene].”
“The cold-blooded murder of mostly children and teens can’t be explained from a security perspective or basic rules of engagement,” said Hussam Zomlot, co-founder of the Palestine Strategy Group.
Nurhan is the latest Palestinian minor to be threatened with a severe sentence.
More than 7,000 Palestinians including 350 minors are currently imprisoned throughout Israel, according to official Palestinian figures.
Earlier this month, 14-year-old Ahmad Manasra was sentenced to 12 years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of 80,000 Shekels ($20,664) for allegedly stabbing Israelis last year.
