JNU students union poll records 53.3 percent turnout

New Delhi: The students union election at Jawaharlal Nehru University here on Friday recorded 53.3 percent turnout, a marginal dip from last year.

Last year, the voters’ turnout was 54.58 percent.

The voting in the university was conducted at five centres with the exercise ending at 5:30 pm.

“Counting of votes will start at 9:30 pm today (Friday) in the midst of tight security. The process of counting will go on till Sunday morning. The polling was conducted in a peaceful manner,” said JNU poll’s chief election commissioner Praveen Thallapelli.

A total of 22 candidates were contesting for the Jawaharlal Nehru Students Union central panel that has posts of president, vice-president, general secretary and joint secretary.

Other 83 candidates had contested for the posts of councillors at all the centres of the university. All the major posts are now with the All India Students’ Association.
