Judicial inquiry commission on Dimapur lynching submits report

Dimapur : A judicial inquiry commission looking into the Dimapur lynching headed by retired Gauhati High Court judge, Justice B.D. Agarwal which began its inquiry in mid May 2015 has reportedly submitted its report on March 9.

Sources said that commission has submitted its report in two parts- one on the findings about the officers and how the incident had happened. The other parts were recommendations with some valuable suggestions.

One of the commission’s findings reportedly suggested deportation of Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants (IBIs) in the line of Assam on National Registration of Citizens (NRC).

However, after almost two months of submission of the report, the state government is yet to make it known to the public.

It may be mentioned that Syed Sarif Khan, who was arrested following an allegation of rape, was dragged out from the central jail by a mob and lynched, and his body was left hanging in the City Tower on the evening of March 5, 2015.

One person identified as Inito Swu, who was among the five injured in police firing on the mob, succumbed.

Immediately after the incident, the state cabinet decided to suspend deputy commissioner Wezope Kenye, SP Meren Jamir and B Chuba Phom, senior superintendent of Dimapur Central Jail, for ‘their failure to control the situation.’

A judicial inquiry was ordered in May to ascertain the causes and circumstances leading to the incident of vandalism and forcible entry into the Dimapur Central Jail by a mob and killing of an under-trial prisoner and another person in the ensuing violence.

The inquiry commission, through the public notice specifically asked local media civil, students organisation and as well as the victim girl and family members of the victims to file written statement before the commission. (ANI)
