Muslim woman prefers ‘pardah’ over ‘sari’, drops teacher training

New Delhi: A Muslim woman from Kerala decided to give up her dream to pursue BED after the institution denied to let her attend the classes in ‘Burqah’(abaya).

Kerala Naduvathul Mujahideen run teacher training institute ‘Jamia Nadwiya’ has strict norms regarding the dress code said the authorities.

Husna, a resident of Malappuram district of Kerala, dropped her dream to pursue BED after the institute said it would not allow her to attend the classes in abaya.

According to her husband, he has written a letter to the authorities requesting them to permit her to attend the classes wearing Abaya since most of the Muslim organizations have relaxed the norm and permit their students wearing an abaya, but the authorities refused their request.

“We decided that Husna will wear Purdah as it would be more comfortable and safer than sari and approached the authorities even though there is a stipulation in the institute that students should wear sari three days in a week” as uniform”, said her Husna’s husband.

When the institute was contacted, a senior official at the institute said rues will remain the same for all the students and cannot be altered for an individual.

He said, “If we relax the rule for one person now, there will be such demands from others also.”
