Lanka’s opposition party protests on UN Human Rights Chief visit

Colombo : The National Freedom Front (NFF), Sri Lanka’s opposition political party led by MP Wimal Weerawansa has organized a protest in Colombo against the visit of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.

UN Chief arrived in the island on a four day visit at the invitation of the Sri Lankan Government.

Hundreds of protesters carrying placards and shouting slogans gathered outside the UN complex in Colombo to protest the chief’s visit which according to the protesters would affect the Sri Lankan military adversely,reported the Lanka Page.

Protesters holding banners that read ‘Al Hussein hands off – Sri Lanka’, ‘We condemn your report’ and ‘Don’t send war heroes to the guillotine’ marched to the UN office in Colombo from the Lipton Circus and staged a protest outside the UN office.

NFF leader Weerawansa led the demonstrators and addressed the crowd gathered outside the UN complex.

Al-Hussein has come here to take our war heroes to guillotine, but we won’t allow that to happen, Wimal Weerawansa added.

The police deployed additional troops to beef up the security to the UN complex.(ANI)
