Mumbai: The Congress party, which has lost a succession of local body polls across the country in recent times to add to its drubbing in the 2014 general elections, on Thursday put in a poor performance in municipal elections across Maharashtra.
In Mumbai, the Congress led in just 28 seats at 1:30 pm, and is poised to finish well below its tally of 52 in 2012.
The Congress also managed a lead on just 3 wards in Pune, and none in Thane.
In Nagpur, the Congress tally reduced from 41 in 2012 to 14 this time around.
Following the drubbing, Mumbai Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Sanjay Nirupam tendered his resignation to the party top brass.
“With all humility, I take the responsibility of defeat of Congress party in #BMCPolls2017. Hence, I have offered my resignation from the post,” Nirupam tweeted.
Milind Deora, a former parliamentarian from the Congress who represented Mumbai, also tweeted an admission of defeat.
“Congrats Shiv Sena & BJP for retaining BMC. For Mumbai’s sake, earnestly hope the next 5 years are better than the last 2 decades,” he said.
