Maldives President appeals for calm after VP’s arrest

London: The President of the Maldives Yameen Abdul Gayoom has appealed for calm in the nation after Vice President Ahmed Adeeb was arrested for allegedly plotting to assassinate him in a blast on his boat last month.

According to The Guardian, Gayoom escaped the blast on September 28 without getting hurt. He said yesterday that it was not easy for him to witness the arrest of his vice president.

Adeeb was appointed to the office only three months ago.

Gayoom said that the decision to arrest Adeeb was made “for the security of the country”, adding that he would wait for the case to go to trial before beginning any process to impeach him. (ANI)
