Man gets lifer for wife’s murder

Thane (Maha): A local court today sentenced to life imprisonment a 50-year-old tribal villager from Jawhar taluka in the district for hacking his wife to death in 2014.

Additional Sessions Judge A S Bhaisare found Ramesh Nandu Surum from Kharamba village guilty of murder and awarded the sentence.

According to the prosecution, the convict was married to one Dwarki, alias Sita, and the couple had five daughters and two sons. He had a habit of drinking and used to get into arguments with his wife and beat her.

On several occasions, the neighbours had intervened in their dispute to pacify the couple, it added.

“On February 17, 2014, the couple had an argument over food, in which the accused picked up an axe and hit her on the head, killing her on the spot. The accused was nabbed by the neighbours,” Additional Public Prosecutor Dileep Bahiram told the court.

Defence counsel Ramrao Jagtap urged the court to take a lenient view of the accused. However, the court rejected his submission and based on eyewitness’ account and other evidence convicted him.
