Man on run for 6 years after killing wife arrested

Thane: A hotel waiter who was on the run after allegedly killing his wife by setting her afire six years ago has finally been arrested, police said today.

Gulab Giridhari Yadav alias Kumar Gazi (31), hailing from a village in Jharkhand, was against his wife–Pooja Kumar Gazi (23)–working in a bar and the couple used to have frequent quarrels over the issue, Kapurbawdi Police Station Inspector B T Barawkar said.

On May 2, 2010, when Pooja returned home from work, the accused got annoyed and again scolded her. He then allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her on fire. The woman sustained 99 per cent burns and was rushed to Civil Hospital where she died during treatment, police said.

The accused himself got his wife admitted in the civil hospital and later fled the city. Since then, he was living in Jharkhand, they said.

The area where he lived was Naxal-hit and Thane police went to his hometown several times but could not trace him.

However, after searching him for six years, police got a tip-off that he was to come to Thane city. Subsequently, police laid a trap at Kapurbawadi and arrested him on Wednesday.

He has been booked under relevant sections of the IPC, they added.
