MIM defies TRS wave in GHMC; others washed away

All India Majlis-Itthehadul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) has protected its hold in the TRS wave in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections in which the Indian National Congress and the BJP-TDP combine, the main Opposition parties in the Telangana State, were washed away in the TRS wave.

The MIM party won not only in Old City but also in some places in New City. The Party has won 40 seats and stood in a second place though its number decreased compared with last elections. In the last elections, MIM had won 43 divisions and stood at  third place.

In the present elections, TDP, BJP, Congress and TRS targeted MIM and poured allegations in a huge manner. MIM leaders, on election day, attacked Congress, TRS, BJP and TDP leaders in Old City in different incidents. Opposition parties including Congress, TDP, BJP have lodged a complaint with the Governor against MIM attacks. But the MIM managed to protect its hold in Old City by winning almost all in its bastion. Owaisi Brothers participated in election campaign in hectic manner and encouraged its cadre in a great manner.

In the last elections, MIM shared Mayor post with Congress party, which won 53 seats and stood in first place. First three years, the then Tarnaka division corporator Banda Karthika Reddy performed as Mayor and later MIM Mohadipatnam corporator Majid Hussain performed as Mayor. The TDP, which won 45 seats in the last election, acted as main opposition party.

This time MIM, which was playing key role in making Mayor every time, may not get an important role in the GHMC elections as TRS was very near to magic figure (106). The TRS will grab the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts easily with its ex-officio members. (NSS)
