Modi can only give speeches: Rahul

Prime Minister Narendra Modi can only give speeches, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi said today, while asserting that the former’s Gujarat model of development has failed, as proven by the victory of his party in the state’s local poll.

“Modi can only give speeches…Like a balloon which only bounces. The Gujarat model has failed. Congress was victorious in the (local) elections there,” Gandhi said addressing a meeting of block and district level party leaders here, in the run-up to the 2016 Assam Assembly election.

“It is because Narendra Modi’s model has failed that a big agitation has been launched by a community (Patels) in Gujarat,” he asserted.

“India thought ‘acche din’ (good days) will come as promised by Modi before the elections, but after losing the Bihar poll, he does not mention a word about it,” Gandhi observed.

The Congress leader said that during Modi’s poll campaign in Bihar, the Prime Minister had called Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar ‘bewakuf’ (foolish),

Rahul reminded those present at the meeting and wondered “are we bewakufs too?”

The Gandhi scion also accused Modi of removing the Special Category State status given by the earlier Congress central government to Assam, whereby 90 per cent of central funds were given as grants and rest 10 per cent state funds.

“Bihar will be repeated in Assam,” he asserted, saying Tarun Gogoi and Congress had worked real hard.

The leader also had an interaction with the women representatives of Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Assam, listening to their problems and assuring them that their issues would be taken up with the government.

“The SHGs is a fantastic programme. It empowers women in Assam. I am satisfied with the action taken by Tarun Gogoi,” Gandhi added.
