Mukherjee greets people of Lesotho on Independence Day

New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday greeted the people of south African country of Lesotho on their Independence Day.

“On behalf of the government, the people of India and my own behalf, I take this opportunity to convey warm greetings and felicitations to Your Majesty, the government and people of Lesotho on the occasion of your Independence Day,” he said in a message to King Letsie III of Lesotho.

India and Lesotho shared long-standing bilateral relations which have grown stronger and vibrant in recent years, he said, adding that their partnership was based on shared understanding on issues of common interest.

“I am confident that our relations will continue to prosper to the mutual benefit of our peoples,” Mukherjee said.

Lesotho, which is completely surrounded by South Africa, got independence from Britain on October 4, 1966.
