Murshid murder case: Killed by sanitation worker, poor family appeals for help

New Delhi: A 35-year-old Murshid Ansari was stabbed to death allegedly by a sanitation worker in south Delhi’s Hauz Khas area following an argument over spitting, police said.

Victim Murshid, and the accused Mukesh Mandal, 40, rented different rooms in the same flat in Gujjar Colony in south Delhi’s Gautam Nagar.

At around 9.15 pm, after offering namaz, Murshid was going to his room when he found Mukesh sitting on the stairs. Murshid asked him to make some space as he blocked his way on the stairs.

But, Mukesh instead of making space started brandishing his vegetable knife to scare him.

Murshid, who was chewing tobacco, suddenly spat on the wall. Mukesh objected to him spitting on the floor, which leads to a heated argument after which he was stabbed multiple times.

“Mukesh got furious and asked Murshid to clean the wall. Murshid said he could do it anytime but he had to go to his room then,” said a neighbour, who witnessed the argument.

Murshid was a quiet man and hardly ever talked to anyone, said his neighbor. “We all come back from work around 5 or 6 pm and we always meet together for tea, but Murshid rarely joined us,” said Mustar.

But Mukesh, an alcoholic and used to take drugs and picked up fights and threatened others too with the knife, neighbours alleged.

The accused was caught by those present on the spot and handed over to police.

A case of murder was registered at the Hauz Khas police station and the accused arrested, said the officer.

Murshid, a native of Purnia in Bihar worked as labourer on contract basis in Delhi. He is survived by wife and children. The family appeal for help.
