Must Watch: In India, Fake & Controversial ‘Encounters’ That Came Before Bhopal

The bhopal encounter this week was not the first of its kind….

And certainly not the only one deemed questionable

Here are other strange, fake or controversial encounters in the past

 

Sunder, a dreaded criminal, was killed in an encounter near ITO, delhi by PS bhinder, the then commissioner of police and a close aide of sanjay Gandhi.

His killing was the first case of a high-profile encounter by the people.

Maya dolas, Dawood Ibrahim’s henchman, was gunned down on sixteen November 1991 at the lokhandwala complex in Mumbai.

 

The four hour long shootout was streamed live and videographed by the police, becoming one of the biggest operations carried out by a police force.

 

On 15 june 2004, 19 year old ISHRAT jahan, along with three others, was gunned down close to a water treatment plant on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

 

Police said that the four were Lashkar-e-taiba (LET)operatives plotting to kill the then Gujarat CM, Narendra modi.

The SIT probe on the incident said that the ‘ Purported encounter’ was not ‘genuine’.

 

Two alleged terrorists were killed in an encounter in the basement of Delhi’s Ansal Plaza in 2002.

According to an ‘Eye –Witness account, the encounter was fake, leading to an inquiry by the National human rights Commission.

The inquiry report eventually cleared the delhi police of any wrongdoing.

 

Sohrabuddin shaik was killed by the police in an encounter on twenty six November 2005.

It was alleged that he was planning an attack on the then Gujrat chief minister, Narendra modi.

The CBI opened an investigation against the police officers involved in the case, resulting in the arrest and conviction of most officers involved.

 

On 19 september 2008, two alleged indian mujahideen activists – Atif Amin and Mohammed Sajid were killed in the batla house area of Jamia Nagar in Delhi.

This caused massive unrest, with many deeming it a ‘Fake’ encounter.

Eventually, the National Human rights commission in its report cleared the police of any violation of rights.

 

Ranbir singh, an MBA graduate, was killed in a fake encounter on 3 july 2009 in uttarakhand.

As many as 17 uttarakhand police officers were convicted in the case.

 

on 7th April 2015, Telangana state police killed five under-trial prisoners in Encounter near Alair in Nalgonda district.

 

on 26 october 2016, AT LEAST 24 Maoists, including 11 women, were killed in a 90-minute-long encounter with a joint team of the Odisha Police and Andhra Pradesh Police Greyhounds personnel.
