Amritsar : Dismissing reports that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had nominated Navjot Singh Sidhu for the Rajya Sabha because of his reported threat to join the Aam Aadmi Party, his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu on Saturday said if her husband wanted to join the AAP, he would have done so and nobody could have stopped him.

However, Sidhu, Chief Parliamentary Secretary and BJP’s Amritsar (East) MLA, told ANI: “The party (BJP) understands too that there is so much difference between Navjot Singh Sidhu and the Akali Dal and that is why he has been kept out of Punjab.”

Stating that her husband has always revered the BJP like his mother, she said, “He never questioned any decision taken by the party, and carried out all the responsibilities assigned to him by the party with utmost honesty.”

He feels honoured that his name figured in the Prime Minister’s special list and he was nominated for the Rajya Sabha, she said.

“He is very hard working, and we have great expectations from him. He will be able to deliver in Parliament, and will raise many important issues, and bring something new for Punjab,” she added.

You will have to question him; otherwise, if he would have to come in the election with the Akali Dal, he would have been made (Punjab) chief.

The BJP also understands that there is so much difference between Navjot Singh Sidhu and the Akali Dal and that is why has been kept out of Punjab.

When asked would she contest election with Akalis, Sidhu said she would contest election as she had worked for it, but she would not contest elections with Akalis (in alliance with SAD).

Former Amritsar MP and cricket commentator Sidhu, senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, Olympics medal-winning boxer Mary Kom, journalist Swapan Dasgupta, Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi and economist Narendra Jadhav were on Friday nominated by the Prime Minister’s Office for the Rajya Sabha membership.

There are 12 seats of nominated members in the Rajya Sabha, of which seven are vacant at present. (ANI)
