Is NIA chief shielding Hindutva terrorists?

By MM Special Correspondent

In October last year the tenure of NIA chief Sharad Kumar who was due to retire at the time was extended, by a committee headed by the Prime Minister. His extension was unprecedented and is seen by many as a means to shield the Hindutava extremists who were found involved in Malegaon and Samjhauta Express blasts.

Hindutava extremist groups were found involved in the blasts by the NIA when UPA was in power.

Extending the tenure of NIA chief Sharad Kumar, who is known to be close to BJP was seen by many others too as a means to shield Hindutava terror elements and prosecute Muslim accused in their place.

Navaid Hamid, president of All India Muslim Majlis e Mushawarat has alleged that the Modi led Government does not want Hindutava extremism to come on international radar and are influencing the investigations for the same reason.

In June 2015 special public prosecutor Rohini Salian reveled that she had been asked by NIA to go soft on Hindutava extremists.

To add to it is the fact that the nine Muslim accused were kept in jail even when NIA had no proof against them.

Despite Swami Aseemanand’s confession to police that Malegaon blasts had been carried out by Hindutava extremist groups, there has been untiring effort to implicate nine Muslim accused in the case.

Special Judge in Malegaon blast case V V Patil, while acquitting nine Muslim accused in the case, this week stated in no uncertain terms that the men were used as ‘scapegoats’.

According to a report in online news journal the Wire an officer on condition of anonymity has stated “That he (Kumar) is close to the BJP-led government seems to be the reason behind his extension. The special public prosecutor Rohini Salian’s controversial comments against NIA explains why Kumar was given an extension with so much power,”

Last week Congress has demanded removal of the Director General of National Investigation Agency (NIA) and monitoring of all cases by the Supreme Court. Making a scathing attack on the Modi government, it said pressure is being put on NIA to safeguard the RSS.

Congress Party spokesperson Dr Ajoy Kumar said “Since the Narendra Modi government came to power; we have seen witnesses turn hostile. Be it in the Samjhauta Express, Ajmer or Malegaon blasts.”

Accusing the BJP of undermining national security, he claimed it was using the NIA to serve its petty political interests. He wondered why the NIA director’s tenure has been extended and his contract should be immediately terminated.

“It is really amazing a premier investigative agency chief was hired on contract; this was never happened in this country, this is the way of functioning of the Modi government”.

Congress leader also alleged that top RSS leaders were involved in terror conspiracy as Aseemanand made a confession that he met RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and senior leader Indresh Kumar adding that despite this the NIA did refuse to continue its investigation.

He said every nation hopes that their investigative agency is honest and has integrity. “But, we are seeing how shamelessly the Modi government is undermining the NIA and using it for partisan politics”.
