NIA crackdown on ISIS sympathisers, newly married couple detained

A joint team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Telangana Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Saturday arrested a newly married Muslim couple on terror suspicion in Vinayaka Nagar near Electronics City here on Saturday.

The incident comes a day after the NIA arrested 14 ISIS sympathizers across the country.

According to police the joint team crackdown at the suspect Javed Rafiq’s house on Saturday, and on realizing that he would be nabbed, Rafiq tried to escape. Telangana Police constable Srinivas, who is part of the ATS, tried to stop him, but Rafiq attacked the constable after he caught hold of the former.

The terror suspect, who is wanted in connection with the 2008 Ahmedabad blast case was detained, and the constable were immediately rushed to hospital.

“After handcuffing Rafiq, we shifted him to Madiwala Forensic Science Laboratory and we’ll produce Rafiq and another accused, whom we have arrested in Hyderabad on Friday before NIA judge on Sunday,” NIA sources said.

Rafiq who worksas an air-conditioner technician is from Delhi and moved to Bengaluru three years ago. He married Yasmin six-months ago and the couple was staying in Vinayaka Nagar. The City police were not sure whether Yasmin was also involved in terror activities.

“As many as six NIA and ATS teams are in the City and more arrests cannot be ruled out”, sources added.
