Nigerian dies under mysterious circumstances

New Delhi: A 36-year-old Nigerian man died under mysterious circumstances within minutes after being confronted by his ex landlord in Uttam Nagar area, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred last week when Igwe Francis was confronted by his former landlord Liaquat in a bank on January 6, over his unpaid rent amount of Rs 80,000.

Police said that Igwe fled from the spot when Liaquat, a 64-year-old man, demanded his money and somehow got injured in the head while running away.

“No weapon of offence has been found. We have questioned 25 witnesses and their statements have been recorded and videographed,” said Surender Kumar, DCP(south west).

Viscera sample of the deceased has been sent for tests, he said.

Police said that Igwe somehow got injured while running away from the spot as the primary post mortem report mentioned his injury on the head as a “bruise”.

There is no record of him as no VISA or passport has been found so far, police said, adding they have contacted Nigerian embassy for more details.

A case under Section 304 (culpable homicide) has been registered at the Uttar Nagar police station. No arrest has been made so far, they said.

Liaquat has told police that Igwe was his tenant and had not paid him rent for nearly 1.5 years.

He said Igwe remained untraced for a long time and came in front of him “unexpectedly”, adding, when asked for the unpaid money, he ran away from him.
