Nurse dies in hospital while on duty

Kolkata: A nurse of a private hospital here died while on duty due to alleged medical negligence of the hospital authorities.

Uma Khes, a nurse with the AMRI Salt Lake, died this morning at around 7.20 am following a cardiac arrest at the hospital itself allegedly due to medical negligence after she complained of headache, an official of the hospital said.

Following the nurse’s death, staff members of the hospital started protesting outside the hospital gate demanding proper investigation into the matter and punishment of those found guilty in the matter.

The protest turned violent when the HR manager of hospital tried to persuade the agitating workers to return to work. Some staff members also allegedly ransacked properties of the hospital.

Khes, a resident of Odisha, was employed with the AMRI, Salt Lake for more than two years.

She had been complaining of body ache and had applied for sick leave four days back which was turned down by the HR manager.

The HR had adviced her to consult doctors at the hospital’s emergency ward where the nurse was told to consult doctors at a ESI hospital because she was entitled to ESI facilities, a staff member of the hospital alleged.

“She had been complaining of headache for the last three-four days and had applied for sick leave which the HR manager had rejected. She was forced to be on duty last night when she collapsed following which she was taken to the emergency ward and was given pain killers,” Khes’s co-worker said.

“At the emergency ward she was not treated properly because she was entitled for treatment at ESI hospitals. And today morning she died following a heart attack,” she alleged.

Several calls made to AMRI, Salt Lake CEO Rupak Barua went unanswered, the hospital authorities have suspended nursing super Tulika Roy and EMO Anindya Sarkar.

Family members of Khes, when contacted said they were yet to lodge any complaint with the police.
