Observing ‘martyr’s day’ for Guru is not right: Agnivesh

Panaji: Social activist Swami Agnivesh today said observing the death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru as “a martyr’s day” is not correct but such an act can’t be branded as “anti-national”.

“Observing martyr’s day for Afzal Guru is not right but you cannot call the act as anti-national,” Agnivesh told reporters here when asked about the raging controversy over a function organised in JNU on the occasion of death anniversary of Guru, who was hanged in 2013 for his role in the 2001 attack on Parliament House.

The 76-year-old politician-turned-activist alleged RSS and ABVP, the BJP’s student wing, were acting as “extra- constitutional authorities” and trying to polarise people.

“The Union Government is trying to link everything happening in this institution (JNU) to Pakistan. This is wrong,” he said.
