Hyderabad: Osmania University was the first university in the entire country which was started with Urdu as its medium of instruction for all the courses. It used to impart education even in medicine and engineering courses through the medium of Urdu.
By the change of time and the governments, its medium of instruction was changed from Urdu to English but there are a few Departments which have maintained their identity, namely; the Dept. of Urdu, Persian and Arabic.
It may be noted that with the inception of OU, the Dept. of Urdu was established and in 1918, the first batch of intermediate students took the exam whereas degree courses were introduced in 1923.
During the past 100 years, OU produced many scholars who occupied important positions in politics and education. Many of its past students became VCs in various parts of the country and abroad.
It is pity that OU is celebrating its centenary but there is no Urdu medium in any of its courses.
