Overseas Scholarship Scheme for Minorities – Budget not released

Hyderabad: The scheme formulated for providing financial assistance to the candidates belonging to Minorities for study abroad is waiting for the release of funds from Govt. of Telangana.

It may be noted that the Dept. of Minorities Welfare scrutinized 513 applications and sanctioned scholarships to 210 students. Govt. has allocated Rs. 25 crore for the implementation of this scheme. The Dept. of Minorities Welfare is not in a position to transfer the scholarship amounts into the bank accounts of the candidates for want of release of funds from the Govt. Many Muslim students went abroad for higher studies. They are awaiting the scholarship money.

The officials of the Dept. of Minorities Welfare disclosed that the budget has not been released by the Dept. of Finance. Govt. had promised to give Rs. 5 lakh as the first installment of the scholarship and one way airfare to the eligible students.

A large number of Muslim students were deprived of these scholarships by imposing the condition of passing GRE/GMAT which is not a prerequisite for seeking admissions in many universities abroad. Many parents are requesting to amend this condition so that a large number of candidates could also be benefited by this scheme. They are also requesting to release the budget of Rs. 25 crore immediately.
