Owaisi seeks withdrawal of cases against Hyderabad varsity students

Hyderabad: MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday demanded withdrawal of cases against students and professors of Hyderabad Central University.

The Member of Parliament from Hyderabad called on students in Cherlapally Jail here. Talking to reporters, he condemned the beating up of 22 students and two professors by the police.

Owaisi, who was accompanied by party’s state legislator, demanded Telangana government to withdraw cases against those arrested and take steps for their release on bail.

“Students told me that they were beaten up in police van. This is unfortunate and highly condemnable. This is something which never happened,” said Owaisi.

Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) will raise the issue in Telangana assembly on Saturday.

The MP said if peace was to be restored in Hyderabad University, vice chancellor Appa Rao should Abe removed immediately. “It is because of Appa Rao’s presence that all this is happening,” he said.

Police arrested students and two faculty members on Mach 22 when they were staging protest over Appa Rao resuming charge as the vice chancellor. They blame Appa Rao for the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula.
