Rae Bareli: Shocked over the gang rape of a mentally challenged woman in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, woman activist Annie Raja on Friday blamed the Uttar Pradesh government for once again failing to uphold the dignity of women.
“The UP government is responsible for failing to uphold women’s dignity. We should use the law to give out a strong message to the people who commit such crimes, that if people commit such crimes, the government will take strict action and punish them,” Raja told ANI here.
“Marital rape in our country is a bitter truth. Women are not safe even in their homes. If you cannot change this mentality of using women as property, dominating them until then there is no benefit of ‘beti bachao, beti padhao’,” she added.
Raja further said that the phenomenon of treating women as a property has to be changed, only women can be empowered.
Rae Bareli’s Superintendent of Police Hari Narayan Singh, said that a case was registered after the survivor alleged sexual assault on her.
“We received a complaint of rape and we are talking to the victim. The victim has named one person and we are searching for him. We will apprehend him very soon,” said Singh.
Singh added that further probe was on into the case.
Anish, the brother of the woman, said, “A man informed me that my sister had swooned. I thought that someone must have physically assaulted her because of which she fainted. However, when I reached the spot, her lower part of the body was not covered. I called some women to talk to her and my sister told them that she was raped. We called the head of our village and he called the police.”
The 30-year-old woman had stepped out of her home in Rae Bareli district early this morning and when she failed to return, her family got worried.
She was found unconscious and in a semi-naked condition outside the boundaries of the village and immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment and medical investigation. (ANI)
