Rocket fired from Gaza hits southern Israel: army

Jerusalem: A rocket or mortar round launched from the Gaza Strip slammed into southern Israel before dawn on Monday but caused no casualties, the army said.

“A projectile fired from the Gaza Strip hit an open area…in southern Israel,” a military statement said.

“No injuries have been reported.”

Security forces were sweeping the area where the object is thought to have fallen in order to recover fragments for investigation, the statement said.

Early in February Israel hit Gaza with tank fire and air strikes that wounded three Palestinians in response to a projectile fired from the Palestinian territory which wounded nobody.

On February 16, Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned Gaza’s Hamas rulers that he would respond harshly to their “provocation” in future.
