Russian cruise missile hits flats in Arctic as test goes wrong

Russian cruise missile has hit a block of flats in the Russian Arctic as the test went wrong, no causalities has been reported.

Residents of Nyonoksa village evacuated the fire in the three – storey building in time.

Nyonoksa is a village near a Russian naval base at Severodvinsk, in the far north-west. The missile was fired from a defence ministry test range which is near the village.

An official statement by the Russian authorities read: “On December 15, a test launch of a cruise missile was carried out by industry experts [JSC Mashinostroyenia] at a Russian Defense Ministry proving ground in Arkhangelsk region.

Four flats and the building’s roof were damaged. The Russian military investigators went to the spot after the missile impact.

A spokesman for Russia said, the shots were fired to avoid a collision, and that it had summoned the Turkish military attache over the incident.
