SC dismisses TN Govt.’s plea for police custody of Kovan

New Delhi, Nov. 30 : The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed Tamil Nadu Government’s appeal against the Madras High Court order, which set aside two-day police custody for folk singer Kovan.

The Madras High Court had stayed the custodial interrogation of Kovan, who is facing sedition charges for allegedly criticising Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

Kovan was arrested from his residence by the Cyber Crime department on October 31 after his video went viral on social media. He was booked under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 124 (A) Sedition.

In his controversial song, Kovan allegedly attacked the Jayalalithaa Government, saying the Chief Minister was enjoying while the state was reeling under the influence of alcohol.

His song ‘Oorkku oorkku sarayam’ mocks liquor shops run by the state government in Tamil Nadu.

The singer also commented on her luxurious lifestyle, pointing that the common man was left to struggle. (ANI)
