SC issues notice to Centre on cattle ban notification asks to respond in 2 weeks

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a notice to Centre over its notification banning sale and purchase of cattle at animal markets for slaughter and also asked Centre to file its response within two weeks and posted matter for hearing on July 11.

The notification has triggered widespread protests with many states openly denying accepting the notification.

Fahim Qureshi, a Hyderabad-based lawyer, filed a petition stating that the order was discriminatory and unconstitutional, as it prevented cattle traders from earning their livelihood.

He has also challenged the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Care and Maintenance of Case Property Animals) Rules, 2017 which provides for the seizures, recovery of the cost of transportation, maintenance and treatment of seized animals.
