‘The Road to Chanderi’ taken at Amazon India Fashion Week Day One

New Delhi [India]:With a warm tribute to Chander fabric, the rich cream & gold gossamer that has adorned royals & regulars alike for years, FDCI kick started the Amazon India Fashion Week. Sixteen designers came together to re-interpret the age-old fabric their way, contemporizing the silhouettes making them more versatile for everyday wear.

The designs we saw on the ramp ranged from subtle, minimalistic to bright & bold. Shimmery skirts paired with gossamer jackets, motifs in gold paired with cream, sarees in pastel colors, pantsuits & jumpsuits in white & sheer were some of our absolute favorites. The designs, just like the fabric were light, luxurious & glamorous, inculcated into dresses, pleated skirts, long jackets, & sarees that can be worn on a hot summer day , for a meeting, a lunch or a soiree.

With the revival of Indian handloom that is being boosted in fashion now, Chanderi falls in row of many fabrics that are being re-interpreted, contemporized for modern every-day wear.

“My entire family champions handloom. There is nothing more beautiful & luxurious than handloom” said actress Aditi Rao Hydari who walked the ramp for the show.

“If we have more faith in ourselves, and not wait for other people to tell us what wonderful things we have in our country I think we will go a long way” she added.

Designer Anita Dongre, who is known for her versatile, “mix and match on your own” designs, focused on minimalistic cream & gold combination for her pieces – gold chanderi skirt, dull gold chanderi jacket, off shoulder dress in cream can be paired with multiple things for an occasion like a Sunday brunch to one of the many wedding functions.

The initiative was supported by Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is an MP representing the Guna constituency (Madhya Pradesh) where Chander fabric hails from. He spoke warmly & passionately of the weavers from the town of Chanderi who work tirelessly to bring us the tradition royalty fabric that was woven into modern designs with the show.

In words of Designer Sanjay Garg “Chander fabric is fine & fragile – an old soul yearning to embrace the future”. And with the designs presented in what was a widely applauded opening show that might have just happened. (ANI)
