Ashitha, now Shaista told that her mother had given her a warning that her love affair won’t have happy ending as she was a Hindu whereas her lover, Shakeel belongs to Muslim community.
It may be mentioned that on 17th April the couple got married after 12 years of continued love. They fought the charge of love jihad as labeled by right-wing activists.
Both the families have been friends for a long time. She fell in love when she was a student of PES College, in 2003, after passing 10th class. In the beginning, her mother, Uma objected to their relationship.
Shakeel’s father, Mukhtar Ahmed, who is a businessman was also against their relationship.
However, both the families agreed for their marriage after several meetings.
The parents of Shakeel expressed their helplessness as the couple was deeply in love.
On 12th April, a group of right-wing activists labeled it as “love jihad”.
Girl’s father, Dr. Babu received a threatening call on 13th April from an unidentified man asking him to stop the marriage or lose his daughter and son-in-law.
Mandya DSP, T.J. Udesha told that the policemen’s prime duty was to maintain law and order and that they gave all possible protection to the families of the couple.
Shaista told, “We were in love for 12 years. How can they call it love jihad?”.
