Smriti Irani degree row: EC submits documents, HC to pronounce order on Oct. 18

New Delhi [India]: The Election Commission on Saturday submitted the required document in Patiala House Court relating to Union Minister Smriti Irani’s educational qualifications and will pronounce the order in the case on October 18.

Earlier, a city court had asked the Delhi State Election Commission to file records relating to Irani’s educational qualification, filed by her while contesting the 2004 general elections, on a complaint alleging she had given false information in her affidavit given to the poll panel.

Irani had given information about her educational qualifications in affidavits to the Election Commission to contest various elections.

In June last year, a case was filed by freelance writer Ahmed Khan, who accused Irani of providing contradictory affidavits about her educational qualifications during different elections.

Khan’s lawyer had informed the court that Irani, in her affidavit for 2004 Lok Sabha elections, stated her educational qualification as B.A. from Delhi University (school of correspondence).

However, while filing affidavit in her Rajya Sabha nomination papers from Gujarat in 2011, she said her highest educational qualification was B.com, Part 1 (correspondence course) from Delhi University. (ANI)
