Students in OU to organise beef festival on June 30

Hyderabad: Left wing and Dalit student organisations all set to organise a beef festival in the campus of Osmania University on June 30, which may result in a tensed situation. While on the other hand, the right wing of Saffron Brigade will simultaneously be organising a pork festival.

As a protest against the Central government’s new norms for slaughter prohibition, students have decided to arrange for the fest. However, none of the student organisations has applied for permission from the University for conducting their events.

A beef festival held on World Human Rights Day in 2015, had resulted in a curfew-like situation on campus, in which several students have got arrested. Stalin, an All India Students Federation (AISF) leader from OU said: “On June 4, there will be a protest by student organisations against the Centre’s notification followed by a conference on June 18. On June 30 we will hold Chalo Osmania University as part of which beef fest will be held,” IE reported.

Solanki Srinivas, Convener of Saffron Brigade said, “We will be conducting pork festival on the same day as the beef festival. If eating beef can be celebrated in the name of secularism and right to eat any food, then why not celebrate pork festival. We will invite those participating in the beef festival to pork festival. They should have no problem with it.” Moreover, OU Registrar, Prof CH Gopal Reddy, said that no one had applied for permission.
