New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday met the family members of 39 Indians who are held hostage in Iraq.
EAM Swaraj reiterated that during her recent Bahrain visit, she talked about the hostages with Arab ministers and none of them said that the hostages had been killed.
“Two of the ministers said that they are alive. Entire Arab world has promised India that they will try to get them free soon,” she added.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had earlier confirmed that 39 Indians, who were held hostage by ISIS in Iraq, were alive and the government was doing all to secure their release after gathering more information.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had also discussed the issue.
MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup had said: “According to President Abbas, all the captive Indians are alive.”
He said the President has also assured to pass on any information regarding the imprisoned Indians to the government.
In Iraq, a group of 39 Indian construction workers were held captive by Islamic State in Mosul a year back.
