Swathi murder case: Accused Ramkumar commits suicide in prison

Chennai: P. Ramkumar, the accused in the sensational murder of 24-year-old Infosys techie Swathi at the Nungambakkam railway station, allegedly committed suicide at the Puzhal Central prison in Chennai on Sunday.

Officials said, “It is in the domain of prison authorities, it is said that he had bitten an electric wire in the jail dispensary,” and had died subsequently.

A top police official said .”He (Ramkumar) committed suicide and the body is now in Royapettah Government Hospital.”

Leader of Opposition and DMK treasurer MK Stalin said slamming the prison authorities for being “unable to provide security” that “I urge for a judicial inquiry into the incident by a High Court judge.”

CPI(M) state secretary G Ramakrishnan
said, “How can a person commit suicide in a prison? what were the prison authorities doing?”

Swathi was murdered on June 24, 2016 at the railway station by Ramkumar,22, a resident of Thirunelveli district while she was on her way to her office.

According to TK Rajendran the Chennai police commissioner Ramkumar was “infatuated” with the victim and was angry at being rejected by her. The image of Ramkumar was captured from CCTVs installed outside the station.

He was arrested on July 1. He attempted suicide by slitting his neck with a blade while police went to his native village to nab him.

Ramkumar was friends with Swathi on Facebook and had exchanged numbers, following which the accused became obsessed with Swathi and started stalking her.
