Tanzanian assault case: NHRC sends notices to Karnataka DGP, chief secretary

New Delhi: Taking cognisance of the alleged assault on and stripping of a Tanzanian student in Bengaluru, NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the DGP of Karnataka government, seeking a report on the matter within two weeks.

“If the contents of the (media) report are true, it would amount to a serious violation of human rights including racism,” the Commission said in the notices.

The 21-year-old Tanzanian woman student was allegedly beaten up and stripped by a mob in a case of “mistaken identity” after a woman was mowed down by a car on Sunday night.

She was reportedly dragged out of the car in which she was seated along with her three friends when she reached the accident spot with the miscreants mistaking them to have caused the fatal accident though a Sudanese was involved in it, police said.

Bengaluru Police has registered a case under Section 354 (outraging the modesty of a woman) of IPC against unidentified persons in connection with the matter.
