Tension grips Mathura village after alleged gangrape; police deployed

New Delhi: Tension gripped a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district after a gang rape case involving youth from another community came to light early Wednesday and a ‘mahapanchayat’ has been called to discuss further action.

Sources said the incident could blow up in to a communal flareup.

Meanwhile, the district authorities deployed Provincial Armed Constabulary and police from neighbouring areas in Magorra village, while the father of one of the accused has been held by police.

In a written complaint, the rape victim’s father said that his daughter was forcibly dragged to a nearby plot around 11 p.m. on Tuesday by some local youths who raped her.

After the girl screamed and raised an alarm, local residents rushed and caught hold of one of the accused who was thrashed before police came and took him away.

Senior police officials have also reached the spot.
