Hyderabad: Old Rs 500 notes cannot be used for purchase of petrol, diesel and gas from midnight today as the Government has cut short the deadline of using old Rs 500 notes at petrol pumps and for buying airline tickets at airports till December 2 instead of December 15 announced earlier. According to the orders issued by finance ministry old notes will continue to be accepted till December 15 for other utility bill payments like cooking gas, railway ticket, bus ticket, electricity and water bill payment, milk purchase, payment in government hospitals, purchase of medicines etc.
According to sources government has decided to reduce the list gradually. While banning old 500 and 1,000 rupee notes on November 8, the government had allowed their use for utility bill payments for 72 hours. This deadline was extended twice.
The reason behind the move to curtail use of old notes at petrol pumps and highway toll plazas is said to be the misuse of the facility to launder black money.
