Tomato prices skyrocket to Rs 70-80 per kg in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Prices of the humble tomato soared since last fortnight disrupting middle class household budget in Hyderabad.

Tomatoes, a key kitchen ingredient were being sold at Rs 25-a-kg till last week is now selling at Rs 50-a-kg in Rythu Bazars and high of Rs. 70 to Rs. 80 for a kilo in open markets.

Not just tomatoes, chillies, which was at Rs 60-a-kg, is now have touched Rs 90-a-kg.

Besides tomato and chillies, the prices of carrot and capsicum have shot up. Carrot is being sold at Rs 61-a-kg while capsicum at Rs 39-a-kg.

Bitter gourd, cauliflower, carrot, capsicum and French beans, all varieties of leafy vegetables have all become dearer now.

According to wholesalers, prices have risen due to rains and heavy reduction in supply of some vegetables from neighbouring states.
