TRS urges Centre to increase Assembly seats

TRS today reiterated its demand that the Centre increase the number of Legislature Assembly seats in the infant State of Telangana.

Addressing the media at Telangana Bhavan here today, party MP B Vinod Kumar said as per Article 4 and Section 26 of the Constitution, the Assembly seats in Telangana State can be increased. The TRS MP asserted that the Assembly seats in two Telugu States after bifurcation should be increased as per the norms enshrined in the Constitution. His remarks assume significance as the Centre has declared in Parliament session that seats of the Assembly cannot be increased without an amendment to Article 4. The Centre also said it was not possible now to take a decision in this regard.

The TRS MP faulted the Centre’s statement and hoped that the Assembly seats could be increased. Vinod Kumar said there was no need of any amendment to the existing Act as Supreme Court gave a ruling with regard to Haryana State. Similarly, the Centre should consider the demand and take immediate step, he said, adding that the Centre if desires can take a decision in Parliament to enhance the number of Assembly seats through Constitution amendment during the Winter session.
