Trump has historic opportunity to solve Israel-Palestine conflict: Hamas

New York [U.S.A.]: Palestinian militant outfit Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal has said that United States President Donald Trump has an ‘historic opportunity’ to pressurise Israel to find an “equitable solution” for the Palestinian people.

“The Trump administration has a greater threshold for boldness and the current scenario presents an historic opportunity to pressure Israel to find an equitable solution for the Palestinian people and it will be to the credit of the civilised world and the American administration to stop the darkness that we have been suffering from for many years,” Meshaal said in an interview to CNN in Doha.

Recently, the Hamas unveiled a new policy document that nominally softens its official position on Israel, while still calling for the complete liberation of Palestine.

Hamas chief said it accepted the establishment of a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders in the West Bank and Gaza strip. He also insisted that his movement was Palestinian National Liberation movement that adopts moderate Islam.

The Hamas leader’s comments are significant at this juncture as a meeting between Trump and Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled for Wednesday at the White House .

The Hamas, which was known as an extension and part of the Muslim Brotherhood Movement, is now making an attempt to improve its regional and international relations by adopting a softer stance.

Moreover, during a February press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Banjamin Netanyahu, Trump had stated, “I’m looking at two-state and one-state, and I like the one that both parties like..I can live with either one.”

Negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians have been at a stalemate since April 2014. (ANI)
