TS Govt. mulling introducing prepaid electricity meters; to begin from govt. offices

Hyderabad: Now you can charge and recharge electricity meters like mobile. If you are out of balance then your electricity supply will be disconnected and will be resumed only after you recharge the card.

Telangana government is planning to launch rechargeable prepaid electricity meters in the state to check power theft and power misuse. At first government will install meters in some of the state government offices on experiment basis. 26000 prepaid electricity meters have been sanctioned for the purpose.

Chief Minister of Telangana convened a meeting of higher officials of electricity department two days ago and took stock of electricity production and demand. Various aspects were pondered over to ensure power conservation. It was decided to launch the prepaid electric meters, so that power pilferage issues and huge power dues can be controlled.

The prepaid meters would also control overload problem in the city. The meter disconnects supply as soon as load exceeds the sanctioned limit and resumes supply only after the load gets regularised.
