Urdu is an Indian Language, it should be promoted: SM Khan

Hyderabad: Addressing the Eid Milap function, Mr. SM Khan, Director Registrar of Newspapers for India, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting told that Urdu is an Indian language and it is the duty of Urdu speakers to promote it. It should be taught as a subject in all the school.

The function was organized yesterday at Press Club by Urdu Journalists Association of Hyderabad.

He mentioned that although Urdu is an official language of Pakistan but every province regional languages are spoken. On the contrary in every state of India, Urdu and Hindi are spoken and understood. Urdu and Hindi have accepted the cultures of each other.

He dismissed the idea of Urdu speakers to complain about the attitude of the governments. He explained that the empanelment of Urdu newspapers is done every six months whereas for Hindi and English it is done in 12 months and 18 months respectively.

He pointed out that according to the number of copies published, Urdu newspapers occupy the 4th place after Hindi, English and Marathi. He advised the Urdu Newspapers to enhance the standard and quality of Urdu Journalism. He lamented that the quality of Urdu newspapers before Independence of India has not been maintained after Independence.

Prof. S.A. Shukoor, Director of Urdu Academy told that 80-90 percent of Islamic literature is available in Urdu. He informed that earlier Rs. 2000 used to be released for Urdu Newspapers which have now been raised to Rs. 5000/-

Mr. Syed Fazil Hussain Parvez Editor of Urdu Weekly ‘Gawah’ also addressed the gathering. Mr. Syed Osman Rasheed presided over the function. Mr. Hadi Raheel conducted the meeting.
