Video: New hope for kidney patients, artificial kidney to hit market soon

Chennai: Many patients with chronic kidney problems who are taking dialysis continuously would soon be relieved when a fist-sized artificial kidney will be available in the market before the end of this decade.

Dr. Shuvo Roy, co-inventor of the device and researcher of University of California San Francisco told that the device engineered in America has to undergo a series of safety and efficacy trials on many patients before it gets approval.

Giving the details of the device, he said that it can be implanted in the abdomen powered by the heart, is designed for filtration of blood and to function like other kidney.

It may be mentioned that every year, nearly 2.5 lakh persons in India die due to kidney problem. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two main causes which account for many deaths.

The cost of treating such patients through dialysis or a kidney transplant is very high in India.
