New Delhi: Thanking the BJP leadership for nominating her to the Rajya Sabha, actress-turned politician Roopa Ganguly on Tuesday said she wants to work for the country and will perform all her duties with utmost sincerity.
“I want to work for the development of my country and will perform all my responsibilities with utmost sincerity,” Roopa, president of the state BJP Mahila Morcha, said. The 49-year-old actor, who by her rousing performance in the role of Draupadi in the mega-mythological serial Mahabharat won millions of hearts, is a steadfast critic of the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Roopa, who had unsuccessfully contested the West Bengal Assembly elections this year on BJP ticket, was nominated by President Pranab Mukherjee to the seat vacated by cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, who resigned recently following differences with the BJP leadership. In addition to being a fine actress, she also won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 2012 for Bengali film ‘Abosheshey’.
