Woman duped of over Rs 40 lakh for mortgaged property

Phagwara : A man was booked today for allegedly duping a widow of over Rs 40 lakh that he took from her as an advance money for a mortgaged property.

Anju Luthra of Preet Nagar had lodged a complaint against the man, calamining that she had entered into a deal of buying his two-storyed house in Adarsh Nagar here for Rs 1.35 crore last year, police said.

The woman said she had given advance money of Rs 41.50 lakh in two instalments – first of Rs 25 lakh and second of Rs 16.50 lakh – to the accused person.

She claimed that the registered deed was to be done on November 30 last year and she had bought stamp papers for it too, but the owner did not turn up, police said.

She, later, found out that he had already mortgaged the house to a bank against a loan of Rs 22 lakh and thus duped her by entering into a deal as he could not sell the mortgaged property.

Police have booked the accused under sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of IPC.
